Rafi was born on December 24, 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh near Amritsar. When she was small, her family had moved from Lahore to Amritsar. Rafi's elder brother had a barbershop shop. Rafi used to spent much time there. Used to spend a day singing a fakir through the shop. Seven-year-old Rafi followed them and hummed the fakir songs. One day the fakir heard Rafi singing. Impressed by his harmonic voice, Fakir gave Rafi a blessing for becoming a huge singer, who also got flourished later.
